Telecom Market Overview China telecom market continues to grow at a solid pace. China continues to be the world’s largest and fastest growing mobile telecom market. Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) December 2014 figures show China has the world's largest mobile phone subscriber base with over 1.286 billion users, which substantially surpassing the 249 million fixed line users as of December 2014. Overall, telecom business revenue increased by 3.6% to RMB1,154.1 billion for the period of January to December 2014, compared to the corresponding 2013 period, according to the MIIT. Within that RMB1,154.1 billion figure, mobile telecom business accounted for over RMB859.9 billion, growing by 3.3% year-on-year. Fixed line subscribers decreased by 17.56 million households and mobile users increased by 56.98 million users for the whole year of 2014. 3G/4G subscribers increased 181 million for the whole year of 2014. As at December 2014, 3G/4G subscribers reached 583 million, which accounted for 45.3% of mobile users at the end of 2014, as compared to 32.7% at the end of 2013. During this period, telecom fixed asset investment rose 6.3% to RMB399.3 billion, compared to the previous period. The penetration rate for fixed line phones is recorded at 18.3%, while mobile phone penetration reached 94.5%. Internet broadband access rose by over 11.58 million households to 200 million over the period. Strong end-user demand and an appetite for lower-priced smartphones has made China the largest market for smartphones since 2012, overtaking the United States as the global leader in smartphone shipments, according to IDC. In addition, TrendForce showed that global smartphone vendors shipped 1.167 billion devices in 2014, 25.9% growth when compared to 2013, while China accounted for 40% of smartphone shipments in 2014.
